Biography
A Toronto-born tenor saxophonist whose robust swing and deep immersion in jazz tradition define his sound, Grant Stewart first encountered the music through his father, a part-time jazz guitarist. During his formative years he absorbed the playing of iconic saxophonists such as Charlie Parker, Wardell Gray, and others. Performance opportunities with musicians including Pat La Barbera and Bob Mover arrived while Stewart was still in his early teens, and at nineteen he relocated to New York City. From that point forward he has shared bandstands with numerous established jazz figures such as Clark Terry, Brad Mehldau, Curtis Fuller, and many additional artists. As a leader, Stewart has issued several albums, among them Downtown Sounds in 1992, Buen Rollo in 1999, Grant Stewart + 4 in 2005, In the Still of the Night in 2007, and Plays the Music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn in 2009.
