The Perth-formed quartet Gyroscope, an Australian alternative rock band originally billed as Gyroscope Sunday, came together in Western Australia during 1997. A demo soon followed, accompanied by relentless live appearances throughout the next twelve months aimed at cultivating a local audience. By 2000 the group had compiled an impressive list of support dates, including shows alongside Unwritten Law and Reel Big Fish, and entered the studio to capture its first two EPs. Both recordings surfaced the following year, after which the band paused briefly so drummer Rob Nassif could complete further studies. Once activities resumed, Gyroscope secured a Redline Records contract and delivered the EP Take Time in 2002. Its strong performance earned the quartet a 2003 deal with Festival Mushroom, resulting in the immediate release of two additional EPs, Midnight Express and Driving for the Storm/Doctor Doctor. That same year the four-piece also backed blink-182 and Dashboard Confessional before issuing its first full-length album, Sound Shattering Sound, in June 2004. Work on the sophomore effort took place the next year inside a Los Angeles studio, and the finished record, Are You Involved?, reached stores in September. Its Top 20 chart standing opened doors to a South African tour while also securing dual honors—Best Rock Act and Best Punk Act—at the 2006 WAMi Awards. Liverpool, England, served as the recording location for the third album, Breed Obsession, which appeared in March 2008. Throughout that year the lineup of Daniel Sanders on guitar and vocals, Zoran Trivic on guitar and vocals, Brad Campbell on bass and vocals, and drummer Nassif performed at the Big Day Out festival, and the album climbed to number one on the ARIA chart.
