Biography
In line with their moniker, Regurgitator excels at reshaping music by pulling from diverse influences and cleverly reassembling them into a flood of tracks and tunes that lean more toward pop than the Beastie Boys yet avoid the esotericism of Primus. Industrial noises blend with funk, hip-hop, synth pop, and disco throughout their work, which maximizes effects alongside samples, treating no source as off-limits. Backed by a robust concert presence that complements their unpredictable albums, the group has risen to become among Australia's top acts.
Late 1993 saw the formation in Brisbane after Ben Ely and Quan Yeomans encountered each other randomly aboard a bus, having previously crossed paths only through separate musical projects. Once drummer Martin Lee joined, the trio submitted a B-side from a demo belonging to Ely's more traditional outfit Pangaea to Warner Bros. for release consideration, prompting the label to extend a six-album contract directly to Regurgitator instead.
To capture their first record, the musicians headed to Bangkok, titling the effort Tu-Plang after the local term for jukebox, with a few cuts incorporating field recordings from the city's streets. Upon its May 1996 launch, the album climbed into Australia's Top Ten and earned platinum certification. Their follow-up, Unit, took shape over merely six weeks inside an aging Brisbane residence so the members could remain nearby, also landing in the Top Ten and dominating sales charts for the bulk of 1998. October brought Unit Rebooted, a remixed edition that refreshed the material and again reached the Top Ten. Greater studio investment went into crafting the third release, ...Art, which arrived in August 1999. During gaps in Regurgitator duties, Ely persisted with Pangaea while Yeomans established Happyland alongside girlfriend Janet English from Spiderbait. Despite repeated rebuttals over prior months, Martin Lee departed as drummer at the close of 1999.
