Biography
Finland's chief contribution to international heavy metal, Hanoi Rocks drew sonic direction and creative fuel from seventies glam while some observers believed the band had blended those elements more convincingly than peers like Mötley Crüe. Although the group never attained the mainstream sales of its era mates, it cultivated a devoted underground audience in Finland and overseas and was later acknowledged as a key influence on mid-eighties glam-metal acts by Guns N' Roses, Poison, and Skid Row. Continuing the thread begun by the New York Dolls, the band's raw punk attitude surfaced clearly on the caustic 1981 debut Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks, whereas 1983's Back to the Mystery City found the musicians shifting toward a tighter, more radio-ready approach suited to the rising pop-metal wave. The year 1984 brought unwanted attention when drummer Razzle perished in a drunk-driving crash with Mötley Crüe's Vince Neil at the wheel, and by 1985 the original lineup had formally disbanded. Vocalist Michael Monroe later pursued a thriving solo path yet assembled a fresh iteration of the band in 2002. Presented as a rebirth instead of a reunion because Monroe remained the sole founding member, this version issued three additional studio albums before winding down activities in 2008.
Hanoi Rocks took shape in 1979 when singer Michael Monroe, born Matti Fagerholm, joined forces with guitarist Andy McCoy, born Antti Hulkko; following several personnel shifts the final roster included guitarist Nasty Suicide, born Jan Stenfors, bassist Sam Yaffa, born Saki Takamäki, and drummer Gyp Casino, born Jesper Sporre. Every member aside from Monroe had previously performed with the Finnish punk outfits Briard or Pelle Miljoona Oy or both. The Scandinavian-only release at the outset, the raucous Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks, arrived in 1981, after which the musicians relocated to London to build exposure and lay down Oriental Beat. Once that album was finished, Casino was dismissed and succeeded by Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley, formerly of Demon Preacher and Dark.
CBS signed Hanoi Rocks in 1983, helping the group gain traction across Britain; their cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Up Around the Bend" became the band's sole U.K. chart entry the following year and appeared on the album Two Steps from the Move. The year closed with an American tour, yet Razzle lost his life in a fatal car accident as a passenger in Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil's vehicle, leading to Neil's later conviction for vehicular manslaughter. Ex-Clash drummer Terry Chimes stepped in, but the atmosphere had changed for Monroe, who informed the others of his departure early in 1985; the band concluded its run that May with a final show. Chimes, McCoy, and Suicide briefly formed Cherry Bombz, Yaffa moved on to Jetboy, and Monroe issued the solo album Not Fakin' It, which spent a short time on the U.S. charts in 1989. Monroe, Suicide, and Yaffa reconvened in 1994 under the name Demolition 23.
Monroe and McCoy nevertheless relaunched Hanoi Rocks in 2002, issuing Twelve Shots on the Rocks through Major Leiden and resuming live dates. The refreshed lineup delivered Another Hostile Takeover, again on Major Leiden, in 2005. Throughout that year and the next the musicians performed across Europe and Asia, then released the full-length Street Poetry on Demolition Records in 2007. Monroe and McCoy declared the apparent end of Hanoi Rocks in 2008, after which the group staged a series of closing concerts at Helsinki's Tavastia Club. In 2017 the Finnish imprint Ainoa Productions put out Rebels on the Run, a collection of scarce B-sides and EP tracks from the early eighties, remastered by Mika Jussila of Nightwish and Reckless Love renown.
