Hatcham Social earned early support from Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess and ex-Creation Records chief Alan McGee while mounting a promising campaign for mainstream success within their English homeland. The London-based group came together in 2006 when David Javu joined forces with siblings Tobias and Finnigan Kidd, the latter then preparing to exit his role as Klaxons drummer. The three musicians quickly found common ground and issued their first single, “Dance as If...,” on Waks Records later that same year. Still in 2006, a follow-up 7-inch titled “How Soon Was Then?” appeared via the independent outlet PopGrooves. Buoyed by regional interest, the band began performing at McGee’s Death Disco nights, where Burgess took notice and offered to helm their next release, the double A-side “‘Til the Dawn” / “Penelope (Under My Hat).” This run of singles helped draw favorable notice from the notoriously unpredictable British music press, resulting in compilation inclusions and extensive positive coverage of the group’s style. Early in 2008 the trio returned with the single “So So Happy Making,” issued jointly by Loog Records and Waks. Their debut album, You Dig The Tunnel and I’ll Hide the Soil, arrived in 2009; produced by Burgess alongside Faris Badwan, it garnered widespread critical praise. Following several additional singles drawn from that era, the band unveiled its sophomore effort, About Girls, in 2012. After pausing for a year to prepare new material, Hatcham Social announced that Cutting Up The Present Leaks Out The Future would reach stores in February 2014.
