Helge Schneider stood among the leading German comedians of his era, securing an unlikely pop chart triumph through the novelty track “Katzeklo.” Born August 30, 1955, in Mülheim an der Ruhr, he left secondary school to begin an apprenticeship as a draftsman, only to change direction and enroll in piano studies at the Duisburg Conservatoire. He first appeared on stage performing jazz in neighborhood nightclubs and cabarets before moving into stand-up, regularly folding his conservatory training into the acts. Schneider cultivated an expansive, openly absurdist stage identity that mixed slapstick, parody, and explicit vulgarity, all anchored in the nuances of the German language. Mid-decade visibility arrived via the lead role in the 1980s comedy feature Johnny Flash, yet his core reputation continued to rest on live stand-up appearances, which he supported by touring with the band Firefuckers and by issuing his first comedy album, Seine Größten Erfolge, in 1989. The 1992 release “Katzeklo,” a whimsical ode to cat litter boxes, delivered an unexpected number one hit and earned him ECHO and RSH Gold Award honors. The next year he made his directorial bow with Texas: Doc Snyder Hält die Welt in Atem and, in 1994, published his first novel, Zieh Dich Aus, Du Alte Hippe. Ten years later he wrote and produced his debut stage work, Mendy: Das Wusical. Schneider drew fresh attention in 2007 by playing the title role in the satirical film Mein Führer: Die Wirklich Wahrste Wahrheit Über Adolf Hitler. Twenty-one years after “Katzeklo,” his 2013 album Sommer, Sonne, Kaktus again reached number one on the German sales charts.
