Guildo Horn stands out as an unconventional German entertainer and singer whose performances feature bizarre conduct, flamboyant visuals, and pointedly ironic schlager numbers, positioning him as a Teutonic counterpart to Weird Al Yankovic. His most prominent brush with international recognition came when he placed seventh at the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest performing "Guildo Hat Euch Lieb!" Born Horst Köhler in Trier on February 15, 1963, he entered the schlager scene at 29 after securing an entertainer position at Cologne’s Luxor venue, where his first album, Rückkehr Nach Mendocino, was captured live in 1992.

Two years later he made his initial appearance on the ZDF-Hitparade, the long-running music competition broadcast by Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen from Mainz, and came in third, underscoring his aptitude for such televised contests thanks to his singular approach. Capitalizing on the momentum, he assembled the five-piece backing ensemble Guildo Horn & die Orthopädischen Strümpfe and soon attracted Electrola, an EMI imprint, which released Sternstunden der Zärtlichkeit in November 1995. The record juxtaposed original tracks with satirical covers such as “Ich Find’ Schlager Toll,” a reworking of Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock N’ Roll,” and “Ich Mag Steffi Graf,” which reimagined the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love”; both appeared as singles, with the former reaching the Top 100.

Building on that foundation, Horn issued Danke! in 1997; the album climbed to number three and remained on the chart for an impressive 35 weeks. The same year’s Eurovision entry “Guildo Hat Euch Lieb!” also became a number-four single. Subsequent releases fared less well: Schön! (1999) peaked at 64, its lead single “Berlin” at 82, while Der König der Möwen (2002) managed only a 99 placement and failed to generate notable hits. His tenure with the major label concluded via the 18-track Electrola retrospective Essential (1995). By then Horn had pivoted toward stage work, taking roles in the musicals Kiss Me, Kate (2005) and Paradise of Pain (2006). He maintained a link to his earlier audience with the 2005 hybrid release Die Rocky Horny Weihnachtsshow, which merged his established ironic style with his newer theatrical focus.
