Biography
A versatile creator spanning visual art, literature, and music, Funny van Dannen first gained recognition through his involvement with the Berlin rock outfit Die Lassie Singers during the 1990s. He later stepped away from the group to devote greater attention to writing, independent releases, canvases, and domestic life. In his solo work, emphasis rests on the compositions themselves, most of which appear as unaccompanied live documents captured in close quarters with only an acoustic guitar for support. The resulting performances highlight both performer and material in unadorned fashion. Humor and reflection mark the material so strongly that listeners’ laughter, captured on tape, effectively substitutes for additional instrumentation.
His literary output frequently blends formats, as seen in the 1991 volume Spurt ins Glück issued by Warnke & Maas in Berlin, which gathered short fiction, verse, and images. Earlier still, his paintings reached audiences before either recordings or books appeared. Outside creative pursuits, van Dannen maintains roles as spouse and parent.
Born Franz-Josef Dajka-Hagmanns in 1958 in the North Rhine-Westphalian hamlet of Tüddern, home to roughly two thousand residents near the Dutch frontier, he traces Dutch lineage and spoke a Limburgish dialect in childhood. During his youth he played football for the Dutch professional side Fortuna Sittard. Relocating to Berlin in 1978, he established himself there as a visual artist. A decade later he helped launch Die Lassie Singers alongside Christiane Rösinger and Almut Klotz; the ensemble issued its Flittchen Records debut Die Lassie Singers Helfen Dir in 1991, followed by Sei à Gogo (1992), Stadt, Land, Verbrechen (1995), and Hotel, Hotel (1996). The band ended its run in 1998 with the compilation Best of Lassie Singers, a split partly prompted by van Dannen’s parallel path.
That path opened with the 1995 Trikont album Clubsongs, issued jointly through Indigo. Subsequent Trikont titles arrived at roughly yearly intervals and consist almost entirely of live takes: Basics (1996), Info 3 (1997), Uruguay (1999), Melody Star (2000), Groooveman (2002), Herzscheiße (2003), Nebelmaschine (2005), and Authentic Trip (2005). JKP, the imprint established by Die Toten Hosen, put out Trotzdem Danke in 2007. Numerous performers have interpreted van Dannen’s songs, most prominently Die Toten Hosen, who featured several across their own releases and have long voiced admiration for the writer. Rantanplan, Udo Lindenberg, and Die Schröders have also recorded versions, the last achieving notable success with a punk reading of “Saufen.”
Further book titles comprise Jubel des Lebens (1993), Am Wegesrand (1996), Komm in Meine Arme (1996), Der Tag als Rosi Kam (1997), Neues von Gott (2004), and Zurück im Paradies (2007).
