The electronic pop group from Germany known as Klee came together in Köln during 1998. Initially launched under the name Ralley, frontwoman Suzie Kerstgens, guitarist Tom Deininger, and keyboardist Sten Servaes switched to the Klee identity after a short 2002 pause, selecting it to salute expressionist painter Paul Klee and the word’s English meaning of “clover.” This rebranding also marked their departure from the guitar rock of the trio’s earlier phase toward a more melodic, electronic sound that defined the 2002 debut album Unverwundbar. Its opening track “Remember You” earned modest chart attention and opened the door to 2004’s Jelängerjelieber, which spawned the hits “Two Questions” and “Gold,” the latter reaching the finals of the annual Bundevision Song Contest. On the 2006 album Zwischen Himmel und Erde, Klee moved back toward a harder-edged rock approach and landed a Top 20 placement on the German charts.
