Biography
Michael Patrick Kelly, recognized as an Irish-American vocalist, instrumentalist, and songwriter, attained global prominence in the mid-1990s through his role as the youngest participant in the folk-pop family ensemble the Kelly Family. Following the appearance of his initial solo recording In Exile in 2003, he stepped back from public view and passed several years in monastic seclusion within a French monastery. His reengagement with the music industry during the 2010s produced gold- and platinum-certified projects including Human in 2015, iD in 2017, and B.O.A.T.S in 2022, with his strongest following concentrated in Germany and Switzerland.
Primarily identified as the third youngest participant in the unconventional, award-winning, traditional German/Irish ensemble the Kelly Family—also styled “the Kellys”—Michael Patrick Kelly, who performs under the additional name Paddy Kelly, entered the world in Dublin, Ireland, on December 5, 1977, as the son of American teacher Daniel Jerome Kelly and American dancer Barbara Ann Kelly. His early development unfolded through busking and performances alongside his multi-generational family troupe across Europe and the United States. By the mid-1990s the Kelly Family had emerged as an international concert powerhouse, and the versatile Paddy had achieved a degree of teen-idol recognition. Overwhelmed by media scrutiny and the strains of public existence, he left the family enterprise in 2004, having released his debut solo album In Exile the previous year under the Paddy Kelly name, then devoted six years to monastic life in France in pursuit of personal equilibrium after a largely nomadic childhood. In 2011 he chose to resume songwriting and recording, issuing his second solo album, the gold-selling Human, through Sony Music in 2015. His third album, Ruah, surfaced in September 2016, followed in 2017 by the platinum-selling iD, which contained the hit title track featuring German reggae star Gentleman. B.O.A.T.S, released in 2022 and expanded from the acronym “based on a true story,” represented his most successful effort to date; its singles “Beautiful Madness,” “Throwback,” and “Blurry Eyes” attained international gold and platinum status, while a later expanded edition added six new songs.
