Biography
Cologne native PeterLicht has long treated recognition differently from most newcomers chasing street-level visibility; the path that took him from songwriter to stage director to award-winning poet shaped a more elusive stance. Even after the raw, low-budget electro-pop track “Sonnendeck” unexpectedly climbed alternative playlists nationwide in 2001 and its homemade video appeared on MTV next to clips by Madonna and Eminem, the public remained unaware of the newcomer’s identity or appearance. An animated office chair occupied the spotlight in that video, while the artist himself released no photographs, performed no concerts, and made no public appearances, leaving magazines without images to accompany their enthusiastic coverage. PeterLicht once described his method by saying, “I drill a hole into the present, see what comes dripping out, and turn it into something beautiful.” Like certain German peers of the era, he fused classic indie songcraft with electro-pop’s synthetic pulses, keeping overhead low through home recording, yet his chief draw remained the lyrics—playfully naïve, oddly comic reflections on politics, romance, and unfamiliar dimensions of everyday existence.
An earlier EP, Sechs Lieder, issued in 2000 under the name Meinrad Jungblut, drew little attention, but the peculiar charm of “Sonnendeck” soon followed and propelled the debut album 14 Lieder to solid commercial results. That record was succeeded by Stratosphärenlieder in 2003 and, in 2006, by Lieder vom Ende des Kapitalismus, released alongside the book Wir Werden Siegen! Buch vom Ende des Kapitalismus. The author eventually supported the project with a modest live tour, allowing audiences their first glimpse of his face. Even then he limited further exposure, directing television crews to avoid filming his features and instructing photographers to shoot only from behind. In 2007 the essay Die Geschichte Meiner Einschätzung des Dritten Jahrtausends earned the audience prize at the Ingeborg Bachman Literary Award, and the following year saw the arrival of Melancholie und Gesellschaft—PeterLicht’s third album and the first to employ a complete band, moving away from the solo electro-pop aesthetic that had defined his earlier success.
