Biography
Scottish pop outfit Hipsway came together in 1984 when ex-Altered Images bassist Jon McElhone assembled the lineup alongside vocalist Grahame Skinner, guitarist Pim Jones, and drummer Harry Travers. After inking a deal with Mercury, the band released its first single, "Broken Years," in the middle of 1985. A few months afterward came the follow-up, "Ask the Lord," yet even with heavy promotional support the quartet remained largely overlooked until early 1986, when "Honey Thief" became a hit. The band's self-titled debut album also yielded a fourth single, "Long White Car," but commercial momentum quickly faded. Their sophomore effort, Scratch the Surface, arrived in 1989 and moved few copies, prompting the group to split shortly thereafter. Skinner and Jones eventually reconvened as part of Witness.
