Hyejin Kim’s pianistic formation and professional trajectory have both drawn from Korean, European, and American sources, and she has lately taken up teaching duties in the United States. Born in Seoul in the late 1980s—she was reported as thirty years old during a June 2018 interview—Kim is occasionally listed as HyeJim Kim and should be distinguished from the violinist, harpist, actress, and K-pop vocalist who share similar names. She began piano studies at six; when her mother proposed enrollment in a specialized arts high school five years later, the young musician replied that although she disliked practice, she could not envision any future apart from the instrument. After completing her studies at Seoul’s Yewon Arts School, she relocated to Germany for a master’s degree under Fabio Bidini at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. When Bidini joined the faculty of the Colburn School’s Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, Kim and several fellow students from Berlin followed, enabling her to obtain an artist’s diploma while also pursuing chamber-music training at the institution. Her competition résumé includes first prizes at the 2008 Hong Kong International Piano Competition, the Steinway and Sons Advancement Award Competition, and the Toronto International Piano Competition, among additional honors. Kim made her recording debut with Sony Classical, issuing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed with ensembles across Korea, Europe, and the United States, among them the Seoul Philharmonic, the Nürnberger Philharmoniker, and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. Festival engagements have taken her to the Napa Valley Festival, Klavier Festival Ruhr, and the Korea Symphony Festival. Subsequent releases comprise the 2021 recital Miroirs on Navona Records and a 2022 Naxos collection of Muzio Clementi keyboard sonatas; in 2024 she collaborated with cellist Yoshika Masuda on the Avie album Hidden Flame. Kim currently serves on the faculty of her alma mater, the Colburn School.
