Biography
Born Sheldon Ellington in Jamaica’s St. Catherine Parish near Kingston, the dancehall and reggae artist known as IamStylezMusic spent his childhood relocating frequently across the island. In the mid-2000s he relocated to the United States, where he formed the pop-oriented dancehall duo Stylez N Kardo. The pair earned opening slots with major dancehall acts and built their own following until the group split in 2012. While Kardo turned to academic pursuits, Ellington adopted the name IamStylezMusic and launched a solo career. After issuing a series of modest singles, EPs, and recordings, he reached a wider listenership through an early-2017 collaboration with R&B and pop star John Legend on the track “Light Up the Night.” The partnership introduced his hybrid dancehall-pop style to new listeners and directly led to the late-2017 album Back to My Roots, which reached the top of the reggae charts.
