In early 1998 a mutual friend invited Los Angeles natives Steven Scott, Alex Church, and Brian Canning to perform at an art opening in Los Feliz Village. The three played together for the first time that night and resolved to keep working as a unit. Keyboardist Shana Levy and drummer Brent Turner joined shortly afterward, at which point the ensemble took the name Irving and began writing songs as a group. Over the next year the members grew close while refining both their musical chemistry and personal rapport. That process produced the songs that became their 2002 debut album, Good Morning Beautiful, released on Eenie Meenie Records. After the record came out, Shana Levy exited and Aaron Burrows took her place. The I Hope You’re Feeling Better Now EP surfaced in October 2003; following two years of touring and tightening their live sound, the band issued its strongest release to date in early 2006, the Phil Ek-produced Death in the Garden, Blood on the Flowers.
