California native Jack Russell launched his path as a rock vocalist and songwriter by establishing himself as a founding member of Great White, the early-'80s hard rock radio staples. Drawing from influences such as Robert Plant and Steven Tyler, he spent his early years leading high-school bands before co-founding Danté Fox with guitarist Mark Kendall in 1977. The group adopted the name Great White in 1981, and three years later issued its self-titled debut through EMI. Breakthrough success arrived in 1987 when the third album Once Bitten... delivered the hit single “Rock Me,” followed in 1989 by ...Twice Shy, whose cover of Ian Hunter’s “Once Bitten Twice Shy” reached the top of the charts. Russell exited the band in 1996 to focus on solo work and delivered Shelter Me on MVP Records in 1999, the same year he returned to the lineup. Great White disbanded in 2001 after staging a farewell performance on New Year’s Eve at the Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana, California.

Russell began performing as Jack Russell’s Great White the next year. The project drew worldwide notice in 2003 when a pyrotechnics accident ignited the ceiling of the Station nightclub in Rhode Island, claiming 100 lives. Mounting pressure from litigation, internal conflicts, and Russell’s substance issues forced the project to shut down in 2005. The classic Great White roster reunited for touring and released its tenth studio album, Back to the Rhythm, in 2007. Another effort, Rising, appeared in 2009 and marked Russell’s final recordings with the original group. Following recovery from multiple back operations after a 2009 fall, a newly sober Russell revived Jack Russell’s Great White in 2011. The band issued its first studio album, He Saw It Comin’, on Frontiers Records in 2017. Four years later, in August 2021, the group followed its 1998 Led Zeppelin tribute with Great Zeppelin II.

Russell’s final sessions came in early 2024 when he collaborated with Tracii Guns on Medusa. After disclosing a Lewy body dementia diagnosis and declaring his retirement in July, he died on August 15, 2024.
