Jarvis Church serves as the stage name adopted by Gerald Eaton, a Canadian-based performer who had already secured notable achievements in music prior to releasing his first solo effort, Shake It Off, during 2002. Eaton formed half of the production partnership that supported Canadian singer/songwriter Nelly Furtado, whose releases achieved strong commercial performance and collected numerous distinctions, among them several Grammy Award nominations—one of which recognized Eaton for Best Producer in 2002—alongside a comparable number of Juno Awards. He also sang lead vocals for the Philosopher Kings, a Toronto-based group he founded alongside Brian West, who would subsequently join him in Track & Field Productions, plus four additional musicians drawn from the Ontario city. Sony Music Canada extended the ensemble a recording agreement in 1993. Eaton’s tenure with the Philosopher Kings yielded gold certification for the band’s self-titled debut album and a Top 10 placement for the single “Charms,” followed by further Top 10 successes and a platinum album. He created his adopted stage identity by merging the names of two Toronto thoroughfares.

During his early years in his birthplace of Jamaica, Eaton gained direct exposure to music’s influence while attending Bob Marley’s One Love concert in Kingston in 1977, an event staged amid the island’s charged political tensions. As the offspring of a prominent civil service figure, Eaton possessed heightened sensitivity to those tensions while observing Marley unite rival political factions before an audience of 80,000 inside the stadium. After moving to Canada at the age of eight, Eaton reached thirteen and began emulating Marley by performing with a sequence of ensembles.
