Jacksoul came together in Toronto, Canada, during the mid-1990s. Its roster includes founder and lead singer Haydain Neale, guitarist Justin Abedin, bassist Dave Murray, keyboardist Brent Setterington, saxophonist Adam Leo, and drummer Roger Travassos. Neale’s commanding vocal abilities function as the central force driving the ensemble. The group’s output fuses funk, jazz, soul, and rock, which resists placement in any single genre category.

Absolute, the band’s debut album, surfaced in 1996. Favorable notices from critics arrived quickly after release. Sleepless, the follow-up, was finished in 2000 on the Vik./BMG label. Jon “Rabbi” Levine produced the record, whose songs include “Don't Tell Me,” “Never Give Your Love Away,” “Let Me Call You Baby,” “I Remember,” and “I Know What You Want.” Lead single “Can't Stop” reached the charts almost immediately, aided by video rotation on MuchMusic, Canada’s equivalent of MTV.
