Biography
Jasmine Trias, a Pilipino-American recording artist, rose to prominence by placing third on the third season of American Idol. Born in Hawaii on November 3, 1986, she has repeatedly voiced strong attachment to her home state. During high school she captured victories at two local singing contests, Brown Bags to Stardom in 2001 and Road to Fame in 2003, yet her major opportunity arrived only when she auditioned for American Idol’s third season in 2004. She remained largely unnoticed until her initial live appearance among eight semi-finalists, after which her distinctive personality and commanding rendition of Whitney Houston’s “Run to You” carried her into the Top 12. While judges offered praise throughout that phase, public reaction turned sharply critical, with many viewers asserting that regional loyalty rather than vocal ability sustained her progress. Controversy intensified when she advanced to the final three by eliminating LaToya London, whom audiences widely regarded as the stronger contestant. Trias ultimately finished third, missing the finale by one position. Following the series she joined the independent label Clockwork Entertainment and issued her self-titled debut album on July 12, 2005; it sold 14,000 copies domestically and more than 50,000 worldwide. A subsequent arrangement with Universal Records allowed a Philippine release that achieved platinum certification. Post-Idol, Trias attained celebrity status in both the Philippines and Hawaii. In 2004 Asian People magazine named her one of its People of the Year; the Hawaii Music Awards later honored her as Entertainer of the Year in 2005 and, in 2006, bestowed Best New Artist and Best Pop Album. She also received two Awit Award nominations from PARI for the single “Lose Control,” cited in the categories of Best R&B Song and Best Vocal Arrangement.
