Biography
Born in 1970 in New York City, Jason Nevins first earned notice as a cut-and-paste mixmaster after launching his DJ career at Arizona State University’s college radio station. Once he returned to the East Coast he immediately started producing remixes of his own. A string of compilation appearances preceded his self-titled debut EP in 1994 and the full-length Red/Green the following year. Further reworkings for Janet Jackson and Lil’ Kim set the stage for his 1997 breakthrough: a reworking of the Run-D.M.C. classic “It’s Like That” that ascended to the top of pop charts throughout Europe and ultimately sold several million copies around the globe. Nevins’ affection for ’80s material surfaced again soon afterward in fresh versions of Run-D.M.C.’s “It’s Tricky,” Rob Base’s “It Takes Two,” Falco’s “Der Kommissar,” and Toni Basil’s “Mickey.” In 1999 the Epidrome label assembled a collection of his earlier remixes for release on Universal. Although he continued to issue original albums, among them Pushing It Hard in 2003 and The Funk Rocker in 2005, his most visible output took the form of DJ-mixed compilations such as Ultra Dance, Vol. 10 and Ultra Weekend, Vol. 5, both appearing in 2009. He also handled the soundtrack mix for MTV’s Jersey Shore, which surfaced the next year. Throughout this period he kept supplying club-oriented remixes for an array of singles, among them Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love,” Carly Rae Jepsen’s “The Kiss,” and Ariana Grande’s “Popular Song.”
