Biography
Pianist Jean Muller has built a worldwide profile through dedicated focus on the works of Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, and Beethoven, including live presentations of the complete sonata cycles by the final pair of those composers.
Born in Luxembourg City on December 11, 1979, Muller benefited from early recognition by his father, Gary Muller, a piano instructor who enrolled him at the Conservatoire de Luxembourg at age six. That same year he performed a Chopin étude in public, and concert activity has continued uninterrupted since then. During his mid-teens he pursued training across multiple countries, beginning at fifteen with lessons from Teofils Bikis in Riga, Latvia, followed by further study in Brussels, Paris, and Munich. His principal instructors over extended periods were Gerhard Oppitz and Michael Schäfer; he also participated in master classes or received guidance from Leon Fleisher, Anne Queffélec, and additional figures.
In 1999 Muller earned a prize at the Tribune Internationale des Jeunes Interprètes organized by the European Broadcasting Union, then secured several additional awards throughout France in 2004, among them the Concours Poulenc, where the jury awarded him every prize on offer by unanimous decision. He has appeared as concerto soloist with the Münchener Symphoniker, the Bayerisches Staatsorchester, the Norddeutsche Philharmonie, and the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra. Recital engagements have taken him to Carnegie Hall in New York, the Salle Cortot in Paris—where he repeated his full Mozart cycle during the 2018-2019 season—and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
On disc, Muller completed a Beethoven sonata cycle for the Bella Musica label in 2011 and launched a subsequent Mozart cycle on Hänssler Classic in 2019. Additional releases have appeared on Fondamenta, where his Chopin Recital received a Gramophone Critic’s Choice distinction in 2013, as well as on JCH and Naxos, the latter featuring his contribution to an album of music by Louise Farrenc in 2020.
