In 2014 Jermain Jackman claimed victory in the third season of The Voice UK, outpacing fellow finalists Christina Marie, Sally Barker and Jamie Johnson. Born in London and already active as a youth politician, the singer secured will.i.am’s support after delivering “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going,” the Dreamgirls number popularized by Jennifer Hudson, during his blind audition. Audiences across Britain responded to his dynamic, soulful timbre, while his poised delivery stood out on a cover of Luther Vandross’ “A House Is Not a Home.” In the live final he revisited the Dreamgirls showpiece and joined his mentor will.i.am for a duet of “Pure Imagination” from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a pairing that secured the decisive public vote. A digital single of the Dreamgirls track appeared straight after broadcast and soon registered on the U.K. Top 100.
