Biography
Britain's Olly Murs rose to broad public attention after placing second on the sixth season of The X Factor, delivering upbeat material that blended catchy R&B grooves, funk rhythms, and reggae-tinged dance-pop. His playful stage presence and strong vocal tone drew immediate parallels to Will Young and Robbie Williams, qualities that propelled his self-titled 2010 debut album to number two on the U.K. chart. Four straight number-one U.K. albums followed: 2011's In Case You Didn't Know, 2012's Right Place Right Time, 2014's Never Been Better, and 2016's 24 Hrs, each generating major singles such as "Please Don't Let Me Go," "Heart Skips a Beat," "Troublemaker," and "Wrapped Up," the latter featuring Gym Class Heroes' Travie McCoy. In 2018 he returned to the Top Ten with You Know I Know and joined The Voice UK as a coach; after a recording break he issued his seventh album, Marry Me, which became his fifth U.K. number-one record upon release in 2022.
Oliver Stanley Murs entered the world in Essex in 1984. At school he showed scant interest in singing and instead concentrated on football, playing for the school side and later turning out semi-professionally for local non-league club Witham Town. A 2007 appearance on Deal or No Deal netted him just £10, yet his 2009 performance of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" on the sixth series of The X Factor revealed his vocal ability. Under Simon Cowell's mentorship during the live shows he impressed judges with interpretations of material by the Beatles, Queen, and George Michael, quickly becoming the favorite to win. Despite sharing a duet with his musical hero Robbie Williams in the tense finale, Murs finished second to Joe McElderry.
A six-figure recording contract with Epic/Syco Music arrived in 2010, followed by participation in the sold-out X Factor arena tour. Personally invited by Williams to perform at the televised Soccer Aid charity match, Murs issued his debut single, the Jason Mraz-inspired "Please Don't Let Me Go," that August. Songs co-written by Eg White, Scouting for Girls' Roy Stride, and Wayne Hector filled the self-titled album released later that year, which yielded three U.K. Top 20 singles including the chart-topping debut track alongside "Thinking of Me" and "Heart on My Sleeve."
Late in 2011 he stepped away briefly from music to host the eighth season of The Xtra Factor, the behind-the-scenes companion to The X Factor. His familiarity with the show's inner workings and lively personality endeared him to viewers and co-presenter Caroline Flack alike. While preparing each episode he collaborated on material for his second album with Steve Robson, known for work with Lily Allen and James Morrison, and Claude Kelly, whose credits include Kelly Clarkson and the Backstreet Boys. The lead single "Heart Skips a Beat," featuring U.K. hip-hop duo Rizzle Kicks, emerged in summer 2011 and became an immediate success; the full album In Case You Didn't Know arrived in November and delivered his first U.K. number-one record. The following year he supported One Direction on their North American tour and reissued "Heart Skips a Beat," this time swapping Rizzle Kicks for Philadelphia rap duo Chiddy Bang to tie in with those dates.
Also in 2012 he released his third studio set, Right Place Right Time, which featured the single "Troublemaker" with rapper Flo Rida. The album topped the U.K. chart and reached number 19 on the Billboard 200. Prestigious live outings followed in summer 2013, among them an opening slot on Robbie Williams' Take the Crown stadium tour that included joint performances with the former Take That frontman. By year's end Murs had recorded with Williams again, contributing to the track "I Wanna Be Like You" on the album Swings Both Ways.
November 2014 brought the fourth studio album Never Been Better, containing the single "Wrapped Up" featuring Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy. Another U.K. chart-topper, it also entered the Billboard 200 top 50. A European tour supporting the record sold out across the U.K. and Ireland in mid-2015. That April he was announced as returning alongside former Xtra Factor co-host Caroline Flack to present the main X Factor series after Dermot O'Leary's departure. A special edition of Never Been Better appeared toward the close of the year, adding seven extra tracks—including the U.K. Top Ten single "Kiss Me"—plus a bonus live DVD captured on the European dates.
His fifth album, 24 Hrs, surfaced in late 2016 and included the singles "You Don't Know Love" and "Grow Up," securing a fourth consecutive U.K. number-one album. The next year he released an acoustic version of "Unpredictable" with singer Louisa Johnson. The sixth project arrived in 2018 as a double album pairing new material with greatest-hits selections; landing at number two in the U.K., You Know I Know featured the Ed Sheeran-written single "Moves" with Snoop Dogg and the track "You Know I Know" with Shaggy.
Around 2018 Murs began an extended recording hiatus yet remained visible as a coach on The Voice UK. He also made his voice-acting debut in an episode of the Disney Channel series 101 Dalmatian Street and in an uncredited role in the film Spies in Disguise. He eventually resumed studio work and issued "Die of a Broken Heart" in October 2022 as the first single from his seventh album. Drawing inspiration from a personal relationship and engagement, the David Stewart-produced Marry Me arrived that December and became his fifth U.K. number-one album.
