The London-based artist Katy B, also recognized early on as Baby Katy and Baby Katie, developed a dance-oriented electronic pop style shaped by Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, and Gwen Stefani. She first attracted attention through the 2006 single “Tell Me,” a DJ NG production. Several featured appearances came next, among them lead vocals on Jelly Jams’ “I Try,” Geeneus’ cover of the late-’80s Inner City house classic “Good Life,” and the Count & Sinden track “Hold Me,” all of which arrived before her debut solo release.

That single, “Katy on a Mission,” was produced by Benga and appeared on Rinse in 2010. The album On a Mission followed in April 2011; Katy B co-wrote every track with a range of partners that included Geeneus on seven of the twelve songs plus Magnetic Man, Zinc, and Benga. It entered the U.K. album chart at number two and received a 2011 Mercury Prize nomination before reaching the United States in September.

Following a European tour in support of the debut, Katy B joined Mark Ronson in 2012 to record “Anywhere in the World” for a Coca-Cola Olympic sponsorship commercial. She later reunited with Geeneus while working with Jacques Greene, Sampha, Joker, and George FitzGerald. The resulting second album, Little Red, shifted her dubstep-rooted sound toward a stronger pop focus. Issued in February 2014 after the singles “5 AM” and “Crying for No Reason,” it reached the top of the U.K. chart.

The next year she contributed to KDA’s “Turn the Music Louder (Rumble),” a number-one U.K. pop single. After moving from Columbia to Virgin EMI, she issued Honey in 2016. The project assembled an eclectic list of producers and guests, among them Kaytranada on the title track, Major Lazer with Craig David, Floating Points alongside Four Tet, D Double E, and Novelist.
