Since taking the role of lead vocalist in 1984 with Kassav', the fifteen-piece Martinique-based ensemble, Jocelyn Beroard played a pivotal part in establishing zouk as a widely embraced dance style that fuses Antillean, Zairean, and European elements. In 1998 she and the band united with Youssou N'Dour, Peter Gabriel, and Tracy Chapman on a global tour marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The December 12, 1998, concert they gave in Paris was captured for the multi-artist video and DVD Paris Concert for Amnesty International: The Struggle Continues, which appeared the following year.
