Biography
Joey LaBeija emerged as a Bronx-born DJ whose profile rose sharply around 2014 thanks to bold club performances that fused reggaeton, R&B, and alternative rock with abrasive, distorted basslines and sharp, fragmented rhythms echoing U.K. grime. He launched the recurring club series Legendary, performed at MoMa PS1 and the Brooklyn Museum, and drew coverage in outlets such as FACT and The Fader before issuing Shattered Dreams online as a mixtape in August 2015. The project shifted toward expansive, slower-tempo material instead of high-energy dancefloor tracks, resulting in a brooding, emotionally intense collection. Following widespread praise across digital music platforms, Purple Tape Pedigree pressed the work as a vinyl EP in early 2016.
