Joey McIntyre first rose to prominence as the youngest participant in New Kids on the Block, yet he later carved out separate paths as a solo recording artist and stage performer. Born in Needham, Massachusetts, on December 31, 1972, he entered the group at age 13 in 1985. Around the time he reached driving age, the quintet’s second album, Hangin’ Tough, dominated the pop charts; by 1991 the ensemble also headed Forbes magazine’s ranking of top-earning entertainers. Following the 1994 NKOTB release Face the Music, the members went their separate ways.

After initial forays into acting, McIntyre began writing original material and issued his debut solo album, Stay the Same, on Columbia in 1999. The gold-certified project benefited from the title track’s Top 40 placement and the era’s widespread teen-pop surge. Later that year he supplied “Remember Me” for New Kids bandmate Donnie Wahlberg’s film Southie. His follow-up, Meet Joe Mac, surfaced in 2001, succeeded in 2004 by the self-released 8:09. That same year he made his Broadway bow as the male lead in Wicked, a run that extended into 2005. He next joined the inaugural season of Dancing with the Stars, finishing third alongside partner Ashly DelGrosso. In 2006 the Dancing ensemble toured nationally, coinciding with McIntyre’s covers collection Talk to Me, which showcased his renditions of standards by Cole Porter and Frank Sinatra.

New Kids on the Block regrouped in 2008, launching the reunion via the single “Summertime.” Their comeback album The Block climbed to number two on the Billboard 200. Amid the reunion spotlight, McIntyre still managed to record 2009’s Here We Go Again before rejoining his bandmates for extensive world tours, including a 2011 co-headlining trek with the Backstreet Boys that produced the joint NKOTBSB album. Separately, he released the 2011 holiday set Come Home for Christmas.

On the acting front, McIntyre appeared in the 2013 comedy The Heat, guest-starred on multiple episodes of Fuller House in 2016, and joined the 2019 Broadway company of Waitress. He also teamed with fellow teen-pop figure Debbie Gibson for their 2019 Mixtape Tour. Entering the new decade, McIntyre collaborated with producer Emanuel Kiriakou—known for work with Selena Gomez and Jason Derulo—on the single “Own This Town.” He continued joint performances with Gibson, including a Las Vegas co-headlining date, and together they issued a 2021 duet version of her 1989 hit “Lost in Your Eyes.” Television credits followed with Lifetime’s 2023 adaptation of V.C. Andrews’ Dawn series and the 2024 Roku holiday romance Jingle Bell Love, which featured his song “A Brand New Christmas.” Additional solo singles arrived in 2024 with “Is Anybody Out There” and in 2025 with “I Don’t Need Another Thing.” That year he also unveiled Freedom, a semi-autobiographical album reflecting his upbringing and early fame as a pop star.
