Johnny Fiasco distinguishes himself from most peers through a foundation rooted in rock & roll instead of typical electronic sources. The Chicago native, whose surname is Lopez, first explored music by playing guitar long before shifting focus to house productions and DJ work. Rather than citing disco and funk pioneers, he draws inspiration from the Police, Talking Heads, Rush, and Herbie Hancock. His initial production credit came via Trax Records on the track "Zig Zag." The subsequent EP "Progretto Fiasco" elevated him into major production circles. From there he aligned with the esteemed Chicago house label Cajual Records, established by the legendary Cajmere. Cajual's stature combined with his own contributions led to an extensive catalog of singles and recordings for additional imprints. In April of 2000 he delivered his first full-length mix CD, Cluster, on Afterhours. The project stemmed from a commission by Andy Adams, head of Afterhours, who passed away shortly after making the request, prompting the album to serve as a tribute to the label executive.
