Biography
Derrick Carter stood among the leading figures in the Chicago house surge of the 1990s. He first took up DJ duties at nine years old, playing disco sides for relatives during family gatherings. Shortly after finishing college he issued his initial 12-inch, the 1987 track “Love Me Right.” Two years later a follow-up appeared under the Mood alias, titled “Symbols and Instruments,” yet the local house community soon went quiet, restricting performances to the artists themselves.
Mid-decade revival arrived partly through Cajmere’s Relief and Felix Da Housecat’s Radikal Fear imprints, which re-energized the scene and introduced fresh talent alongside established names. Recording for Organico, Carter delivered multiple singles and one full-length under the Sound Patrol moniker. By 1995 he had expanded the project into a live ensemble, the Sound Patrol Orchestra. Although no original artist album followed, he compiled several DJ mixes, among them Cosmic Disco for MixMag and Pagan Offering for Pagan. He also launched the Blue Cucaracha and Classic labels while reworking material by the city’s post-rock outfit Tortoise.
