An experimental endeavor fusing Krautrock, jazz, indie rock, art rock, electronics, and avant-garde textures, J.R.C.G. takes its name from Justin R. Cruz Gallego, the central figure driving the project. As a keyboardist, composer, and visual artist, Gallego channels his synthesizer lines against drum patterns, horns, guitars, and found sounds to merge disparate sonic sources. After working in prior configurations, he launched J.R.C.G. via the November 2021 album Ajo Sunshine. On the follow-up full-length Grim Iconic…(Sadistic Mantra), issued in 2024, he incorporated Latin rhythms into his electronic palette.

Residing in the Pacific Northwest, Gallego first appeared on record with the indie rock outfit Marrow, contributing to their 2008 CD-R EP that captured live performances. He reached wider listeners through Dreamdecay, a guitar-driven noise rock group whose sets featured an aggressive, dissonant attack alongside skeletal, deliberately challenging melodies. Dreamdecay issued the EP Fern in 2012, followed by the Iron Lung Records albums N V N V N V in 2013 and Yú in 2017, before releasing the 2019 Sub Pop single “N/O” b/w “H/S.”

Alongside Dreamdecay’s gradual rise, Gallego expanded his reach through visual work, producing fine art, graphic designs, and album covers for acts including Vacant Life, Private Room, Criminal Code, Sidetracked, and Violent Human System. In 2016 he composed the score for the independent film Wash. That same year he began focusing on vintage synthesizers, unveiling J.R.C.G. in 2021 with extended keyboard explorations that avoided both harsh noise and conventional melody while incorporating percussion, horn accents, and occasional electric guitar from John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees. Castle Face Records, Dwyer’s label, issued the debut Ajo Sunshine in November 2021.

For Grim Iconic…(Sadistic Mantra), released by Sub Pop in 2024, Gallego drew on Latin music from his youth, blending those rhythms with the darkly atmospheric elements of his earlier recordings to alter the pulse while retaining emotional weight. Most of the album was tracked at his home studio, with final work completed alongside co-producer Seth Manchester at Machines with Magnets Studio in Rhode Island. Guests included Morgan Henderson of Fleet Foxes and the Blood Brothers, Jason Clackley and Jon Scheid of Dreamdecay, and Erica Miller of Casual Hex.
