Biography
Singer/songwriter Julia Brown spent her formative years in Richmond, VA as the eldest of four siblings. Her mother, a classically trained pianist performing at a neighborhood gospel church, introduced her to music at an early age. Brown started composing at twelve, completing hundreds of songs by the time she turned sixteen. At eighteen she departed Richmond for New York University. A pivotal shift occurred in 1999 when she participated in a songwriting conference led by Chris Difford (formerly of Squeeze) amid the English countryside; the event prompted her to approach her profession with greater seriousness. She soon performed in intimate Greenwich Village venues and connected with producer Christian Cassan, resulting in her debut album, Jubilant Newborn Alien Haze, issued by Riot Shack Records in 2001. The deeply personal record incorporated influences from soul, pop, electronica, and folk.
