Karen Peck Gooch, previously known as Karen Peck, participated in several prominent ensembles at the forefront of contemporary gospel. The youngest among three sisters raised in a devout household, she first encountered musical ministry during childhood when her family attended all-night singing programs in Atlanta. In 1981 she became the soprano singer for the Nelons, remaining with the group and the Rex Nelon Singers for a decade. Her contributions appear on the projects In One Accord (1985), Journeys (1986), Thanks (1987), Get Ready (1988), and The Best of Times (1990). The Nelons’ extensive discography and frequent live performances placed her in the national spotlight, establishing her as an internationally recognized vocalist. Upon leaving the Nelons in 1991 she fulfilled a long-standing ambition by forming Karen Peck and New River with her sister Susan and her husband Rickey. Vocalist David White and a rotating roster of musicians supported the new ensemble, whose rapid ascent within contemporary gospel reflected Peck’s accumulated experience. Horizon Music released the group’s debut, Live From the Alabama Theatre, in 1995, followed the same year by the studio album Unlimited. Peck issued the solo recording Carry Faith on Canyon Road in 1996, then rejoined New River for the 1997 Horizon Music project Makin’ a Difference. In 1999 the group moved to Spring Hill Music Group and released Taste of Grace, which received substantial radio airplay; Horizon Music simultaneously issued Southern Gospel. January 2000 brought vocalist and songwriter John Darin Rowsey, a former member of New Journey for more than ten years, into the lineup. Peck has enjoyed success both as a solo artist and as leader of Karen Peck and New River, accumulating awards and appearances on nationally syndicated television and radio programs.
