Biography
Katie Gavin, recognized primarily for fronting the Los Angeles group MUNA, pursues a parallel career as an independent performer, crafting candid tracks that span experimental pop and the introspective '90s alternative style associated with Lilith Fair. Her affiliation with Saddest Factory, the imprint founded by Phoebe Bridgers, led to the issuance of her inaugural solo LP, What a Relief, during 2024.
Having spent her early years in Chicago, she established the somber pop threesome MUNA alongside Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson during their shared time at the University of Southern California in the mid-2010s. The ensemble put out a pair of records via RCA Records toward the end of that decade, yet their self-released subsequent effort marked the true breakthrough. The LGBTQ+-affirming content earned acclaim, with the track "Silk Chiffon" serving as the lead and the matching album both appearing under Bridgers' Saddest Factory banner in 2022, elevating the trio's visibility considerably. Concurrently, Gavin—who had long been developing a guitar-driven individual endeavor—joined the label in a solo capacity, unveiling her initial offering "Aftertaste" that July. Her personal material, more intimate and unpolished compared to MUNA's output, evoked the songwriters from the Lilith Fair era of '90s alternative pop, while incorporating country elements through the violin-enhanced "Inconsolable." These tracks both featured on What a Relief upon its October release.
