Drawing from Detroit techno's pulse and Chicago's industrial edge, the act launched its creative efforts in the opening years of the 1990s under the Feed the Machine moniker. Multiple limited-edition 12" pressings and frequent live sets across raves, clubs, and warehouse events paved the way for a comprehensive overhaul, with the duo adopting the Kill Memory Crash name during the first years of the 2000s. The Ann Arbor-based Ghostly International label issued their initial EP, When the Blood Turns Black, in summer 2003, after which additional 12" recordings followed. Ghostly International then put out the project's first proper album, American Automatic, in May 2005.
