Biography
Kotchy emerged as an electro-pop vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and remixer based in Brooklyn, drawing substantial online attention well before his first album appeared in 2009. Originally from Indianapolis and born Chad Curlow, he began building his path in Brooklyn by serving as drummer for the local group Epochs. Performing under the name Kotchy, which his grandmother had given him, he issued multiple EPs and free tracks through London’s Civil Music and Philadelphia’s Seclusiasis. The initial releases encompassed She Made It Easy (2008), Sing What You Want (2008), I’d Have to Be High (2009), and the 2009 collaboration Le Passion, Yo! with Shunda K from Yo Majesty. Together with a wealth of freely circulating MP3s that spread across music blogs, these EPs sparked steadily growing interest. Writers compared him to Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Beck, and similar artists while striving to label his eclectic sound, whose production draws on glitchy electronica and hip-hop while its songwriting incorporates pop, R&B, and rap. Additional notice arrived via his prominent remix of Tricky’s “Council Estate” in 2008. Kotchy reached the full-length stage in 2009 with the expansive 89, which gathers most of his earlier singles.
