Biography
Following a six-year stretch fronting Dum Dum Girls and overseeing their output of singles, EPs, and full-lengths steeped in noisy indie pop modeled on classic girl groups, Dee Dee—also known as Kristin Welchez—sought a fresh direction. She took on the moniker Kristin Kontrol and channeled early affinities for pop and R&B from the 1980s and 1990s into new material. With assistance from Richard Gottehrer, the longtime producer of Dum Dum Girls, she pared more than sixty songs generated in a burst of inspiration down to ten; she then entered the studio alongside guitarist Andrew Miller of Dum Dum Girls and Kurt Feldman, known for his work with Ice Choir and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, to shape her first album. Sub Pop issued that album, X-Communicate, in 2016, a set rooted in synth pop and R&B that presented a sunnier perspective than the frequently somber tone of Dum Dum Girls.
