Recognized as a pioneering force among hip-hop producers during the 1980s, Kurtis Mantronik launched a solo endeavor in the mid-'90s that aligned seamlessly with the wave of big beat musicians whom he had previously influenced. Serving as the primary figurehead for Mantronix, he crafted numerous foundational rap tracks from that era, such as "Basslines," "Ladies," and "King of the Beats." Transitioning toward R&B and house sounds toward the end of the decade, he witnessed the dissolution of Mantronix in 1991, after which he focused on production duties for a period before stepping away from the industry entirely. His comeback in the mid-'90s arrived via the mini-LP Burn the Elastic alongside the debut full-length release I Sing the Body Electro, whose positive reception motivated him to revive Mantronix and initiate work on a fresh album.
