Lawnmower Deth

In the otherwise grave realm of heavy metal, Lawnmower Deth stood out primarily due to their comedic approach, yet this very trait ultimately led to their downfall. The group originated in Mansfield, England, during 1987 amid the peak of thrash metal. This subgenre already displayed a lighter touch compared to other metal styles, as evidenced by New Yorkers Anthrax who favored Bermuda shorts. The musicians chose humorous aliases for their performances: vocalist Peter Lee became Qualcast "Koffee" Mutilator, while guitarists Steve Nesfield and Gavin O'Malley took on Concord Face Ripper and Scitzophrenic Rotary Sprintmaster; bassist Chris Parkes assumed Mightymo Destructimo, and drummer Chris Flint adopted Explodin' Dr. Jaggers Flymo. Following a pair of demos over two years, their initial release came as a split with the similarly humorous Metal Duck, after which Earache Records issued their 1990 debut album Ooh Crikey! It's Lawnmower Deth!, packed with 26 comedic thrash tracks. Many reviewers and listeners welcomed these songs for their originality and levity within the genre, though the band had limited opportunity to build on this momentum through live performances before criticism mounted. Their 1991 Kids in America EP marked an early misstep, even as numerous UK metal acts turned to covering 1980s new wave songs; perhaps the humor lost its appeal upon repetition. Consequently, the 1992 follow-up The Return of the Fabulous Metal Bozo Clowns came across as more pitiful than entertaining. Adding guitarist Kevin Papworth, formerly of Acid Reign, who devised the elaborate stage name Baron Kev Von Thresh Meister Silo Stench Chisel Marbels, the group then released an album simply called Billy. Almost right after its 1994 appearance, the band dissolved, leading vocalist Peter Lee to join Earache in a behind-the-scenes capacity. They reconvened the following year for a final concert in London, but this event failed to provide a triumphant conclusion, leaving the band's legacy as little more than an obscure reference.
