Biography
In 1987 Dany Dan joined Zoxea and Zoxea’s brother Melopheelo to establish Les Sages Poètes de La Rue. Working out of Boulogne-Billancourt, the trio channeled the relaxed rap aesthetic popularized by MC Solaar and earned their first exposure on Jimmy Jay’s Cool Sessions. Momentum from the “La Rue” single on that project led them to record with the same producer; the resulting 1995 album, Mais Qu’est-Ce Qui Fait Marcher les Sages?, quickly became a benchmark of French rap. Their next release, Jusqu’à l’Amour, reflected greater maturity, underscoring a deepened conviction that harmony arises from peaceful conduct and encouraging listeners to adopt the same outlook. That steadfast outlook aligned them spiritually with other leading French rappers, while their own imprint, Beat de Boul, nurtured fresh talent from Boulogne-Billancourt. Although all three members also launched solo careers, questions about their commitment to Les Sages Poètes de La Rue never surfaced; those individual explorations simply reinforced the group’s cohesion and left them as inventive and receptive as at their outset. Later projects broadened the rappers’ perspective into a full-circle vantage point and gave them the confidence to confront subjects rarely addressed in hip-hop, steadily advancing their aim of attaining greater wisdom.
