Biography
Singer/songwriter Lexie Liu fuses electronic-tinged pop with plush R&B and a sharp hip-hop accent while moving fluidly between English, her native Mandarin, and occasional Spanish. Her path carried her from China through Korea and onward to the United States, where late-2010s tracks such as “Coco Made Me Do It” and “Nada,” both drawn from the 2019 release 2030, helped her cultivate listeners. That same year she issued the swift follow-up Meta Ego, then shifted toward electro-centered pop for the 2021 album Gone Gold and the 2022 album The Happy Star.
Born Liu Boxin in Changsha, Hunan province in 1998, she spent her childhood studying piano and dance before entering an international school to expand her perspective and strengthen her English. Near the close of high school she traveled to South Korea for K-Pop Star 5, finishing fourth yet declining the resulting pop-idol contract. She subsequently spent one semester at Fordham University in New York studying global business, after which she chose to focus on music full-time across both the Chinese and American markets. Her debut single, the trap-driven “Coco Made Me Do It” featuring Korean-American rapper Nafla, earned sufficient notice to secure a showcase at that year’s SXSW. A widely circulated cover of Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez’s “We Don’t Talk Anymore” further expanded her reach. In 2018 she appeared on another competition program, The Rap of China, again placing fourth; the exposure led her to release her first full-length project, 2029, that October. Tracks such as the sleek “Like a Mercedes” and the romantic “Sleep Away” circulated in the U.S., where the latter drew the interest of label 88Rising. After signing, she returned to trap-accented production with the single “Nada,” which appeared on the 2019 collection 2030 alongside “Hat Trick” and “Outta Time” with KILLY. She promptly followed with Meta Ego, another set of rhythm-forward contemporary R&B carrying Rihanna’s influence and spotlighting the streaming favorite “Manta.” In 2020 she supplied the QQ Dance anniversary track “Peacock Dance” and joined the K/DA project as Seraphine, contributing to “More” on All Out.
During 2021 Liu embraced a bright, synthesizer-driven strain of electro-pop, beginning with “ALGTR” on the self-produced Gone Gold. Between projects she released the standalone single “Deep Down” and “818,” the official gala theme for Zhejiang Television. In 2022 she delivered her third official album, The Happy Star, whose sonic range extended from ’90s alternative trip-hop to present-day dance pop. Continuing the luminous, synth-centered approach, the record featured “Fortuna,” a trilingual dance-pop cut incorporating Spanish, and the expansive digital piece “Magician.”
