Lisbeth Scott, a singer and songwriter, first encountered music during her Boston childhood, initially aiming for a future as a classical pianist. Throughout the 1990s she trained at The New England Conservatory, Connecticut College, and The University of London, yet she soon set aside any intention of pursuing classical performance professionally. After moving to Los Angeles she took up an acoustic guitar and began building an entirely different path forward.

Her wispy, cool vocals gradually settled into a simple beauty while her command of the guitar grew steadily stronger. The debut album Sirens appeared in 2000, with Climb arriving shortly afterward. Around the same time her songs began surfacing on television series such as Party of Five, Felicity, Chicago Hope, Touched By An Angel, and MTV's Road Rules. Film work followed, placing her voice in The Scorpion King, Shrek, Spy Games, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

In 2002 Scott delivered her most personal recording yet, the album Dove, issued on her newly founded Zone Records label; reviewers quickly noted resemblances to Kate Bush and Shawn Colvin.
