Formed during the early 1990s through the merger of four preexisting bands, the Lost Dogs issued its first full-length recording, Scenic Routes, in 1992. The ensemble cultivated a hybrid sound that drew praise from listeners attuned to both alternative country and Christian music while sustaining a modest yet steadily expanding audience. Its third long-player, The Green Room Serenade, Vol. One, appeared poised to mark a commercial breakthrough. That trajectory shifted when guitarist and vocalist Gene Eugene died at the Green Room—the band’s own studio—following the 1999 appearance of Gift Horse, after which a broader spectrum of influences kept surfacing in the material. Reduced to a trio, the group issued Real Men Cry on BEC Recordings in 2001. Nazarene Crying Towel arrived the following April via the same BEC imprint.
