Smalltown Poets

Smalltown Poets, an alternative CCM outfit, originated in Tifton, Georgia, when vocalist/guitarist Michael Johnston, keyboardist Danny Stephens, and drummer Byron Goggin joined forces. The three high-school friends had already shared stages in multiple groups during their early years, among them Villanelle, whose independent-label album Pinwheels and Orange Peels appeared in 1996. Guitarist Kevin Breuner and bassist Miguel DeJesus entered the lineup during spring 1996, and the expanded Smalltown Poets secured a Chordant contract the next year, issuing their self-titled debut album. Further personnel adjustments followed, after which Johnston, Breuner, DeJesus, and drummer Nathan Blackstone emerged with Listen Closely in 1999 and Third Verse in fall 2000.
