Magenta originated in Cardiff, South Wales, in 2001 when multi-instrumentalist, producer, and engineer Rob Reed began collaborating with vocalist Christina Booth on a studio-only project built around lyrics supplied by his brother Steve Reed. That collaboration yielded the album Revolutions, which F2 Music released the same year to critical acclaim. Surging demand for live appearances then led to the formal formation of the band Magenta, whose lineup stabilized with Booth on vocals, Chris Fry and Martin Rosser on guitars, Allan Mason-Jones on drums, Daniel Fry on bass, and Reed handling keyboards, guitar, and bass.

F2 Music followed with the second album Seven in 2004 and the live recording Another Time Another Place later that year. Home appeared in 2006; a limited edition added the bonus disc New York Suite. The band’s fourth album, Metamorphosis, arrived in 2008 and adopted a darker tone across only four tracks, two of them exceeding twenty minutes. In 2010 Magenta issued the double audio-video concert set Live at Real World Studios, then released the studio album Chameleon in 2011, an all-instrumental version of which was offered exclusively as a download. Five years in preparation, The Twenty Seven Club reached listeners in 2013, succeeded in 2017 by the expansive We Are Legend.
