Hailing from Quebec, pop/rock vocalist Marie-Mai first drew widespread attention by reaching the finals of the Canadian reality competition Star Académie, which opened the door to a solo career launched in 2004. Marie-Mai Bouchard was born on July 7, 1984, in Varennes, Quebec, where an early passion for music was nurtured by her grandmother, who urged her to audition for the debut season of the Pop Idol-style series Star Académie in 2003. She ultimately placed third, yet left a lasting mark through her distinctive pop/rock approach. Once the broadcast concluded, Marie-Mai joined fellow contestants on a nationwide Star Académie tour that ended in 2004 and laid the groundwork for her independent path. A recording contract soon followed, as did a stage role in the musical Rent at Montreal’s Olympia Theatre.

Issued in 2004, her debut full-length album Inoxydable became a major commercial success in Quebec, generating two years of hit singles—“Il Faut Que Tu T’en Ailles,” “Tu T’en Fous,” “Encore une Nuit,” “Rien,” “Chanson Pour Hier et Demain,” “Tous les Chemins”—several of which reached the top of the regional chart. The record entered the French market in 2006 and was promoted through a European tour. Her next album, Dangereuse Attraction (2007), maintained her Quebec dominance with another string of regional chart-toppers, among them “Qui Prendra Ma Place,” “Mentir,” and “Emmène-Moi.” Version 3.0 arrived in 2009.
