Biography
MC Conrad rose to prominence within the British drum'n'bass scene through his alliance with LTJ Bukem. His improvised rhymes inject warmth and vitality into the live events staged by the Good Looking Records collective, as well as into the Progression Sessions album series associated with that label. The refined collaboration between Conrad and the roster of Good Looking DJs—Bukem, Blame, Tayla, Rantoul, and further members—distinguishes the outfit from the many other DJs and MCs who continue to grapple with fusing rap and drum'n'bass.
The British MC first nurtured his musical sensibility in childhood by absorbing his family’s record holdings, then found himself drawn into the electro movement of the early ’80s. That exposure led directly into the rap culture that was taking shape across the mid- to late ’80s. Though he performed with local hip-hop crews, British hip-hop failed to materialize as a viable force.
Disenchanted with the stalled UK hip-hop environment, he explored the country’s emerging rave circuit in the early ’90s and linked up with Bukem. As Bukem’s profile grew through his exacting DJ sets, visionary club programming, inventive productions, and leadership of Good Looking Records, Conrad became a central figure in the label’s operations, regularly serving as the primary vocal presence at its performances.
He later moved into studio projects with Words 2 B Heard, an endeavor intended to unite vocalists, musicians, and producers in elevating live vocal music through fresh approaches. Conrad appeared on the opening release in Good Looking Records’ Vocalist series, which arrived in 2001.
