Biography
Born into a Haitian-American family in Brooklyn as the younger siblings of Wyclef Jean from the Fugees, Melky and Sedeck Jean grew up with a father who served as an ordained minister heading a congregation in New Jersey, where the pair regularly sang gospel music during services. Melky went on to train in classical music while Sedeck enrolled in law school and performed with a band in his spare time, yet both left their studies in 1993. Two years afterward they cut their first track, “I’ve Got a Love,” which later appeared on the Love Jones film soundtrack. The duo secured a recording contract only to see the label dissolve, prompting them to create a new demo that sparked a heated bidding war among interested parties. They ultimately joined MCA and, in 1999, released their debut album Sister and Brother under the name Melky Sedeck.
