In 2003 Terri Walker asserted herself forcefully across her hometown of London. Her debut for Def Soul, titled Untitled, contained fourteen tracks of smoothly executed neo-soul that sat at ease between classic forms and contemporary trends. The record achieved immediate success, placing Walker in direct competition with Beyoncé Knowles for Best Album at the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards that year. As a child she trained in opera, a background she later credited for the supple, constantly modulating character of her singing. At age seventeen she began actively chasing a music career, aiming to become a soul vocalist in the mold of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Mica Paris. At that moment U.K. garage dominated the scene, leading her to supply vocals for acts such as Shanks & Bigfoot. She nevertheless remained committed to her original aim and eventually aligned with producers who shared the same vision. By 2002, a renewed emphasis on traditional and organic textures had begun resonating with hip-hop and urban-soul listeners, allowing Terri Walker’s approach to mesh naturally with prevailing tastes. Untitled appeared in early 2003 and included contributions from Mos Def and Blueblood, after which recognition followed quickly.
