A specialist in dance-pop and EDM, bilingual Canadian singer and songwriter Martine Johnson performs under the name Mia Martina. She resides in Toronto after her upbringing in Saint-Ignace, New Brunswick, and her studies at Carleton University in Ottawa. During her time at the university she secured an internship at CP Records that evolved from administrative duties into backup vocal work for the label’s roster. Her first solo release arrived in 2010 as “Stereo Love,” a reinterpretation of the prior year’s dance hit by Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina. The track earned a 2011 Juno Award nomination for Dance Recording of the Year. Later that year EMI issued her debut album, Devotion, whose title song received a Juno nomination in the same category in 2012. Meanwhile “Latin Moon” and “Burning” placed her on both the Canadian Hot 100 and the Canadian digital songs chart. Another single, “Heartbreaker,” reached the Canadian charts and Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart in 2013 and brought a third Juno nomination for Dance Recording of the Year. The song appeared on her second album, Mia Martina, issued in 2014 and featuring the additional charting tracks “La La,” “HFH (Heart Really Hurts),” and “Beast,” the last of which reached Canada’s Top 40. She returned in 2017 with the single “Sooner or Later,” which includes rapper Kent Jones.
