Biography
Scottish post-rock duo Midas Fall blend electronica, prog, goth, classical, and alt-rock into their haunting, shimmering, ethereal sound, evident throughout the 2018 album Evaporate.
The pair came together in Edinburgh during 2008, initially performing under the name Merkin, as a creative project led by multi-instrumentalists Elizabeth Heaton, who supplied vocals, and Rowan Burn. Five years earlier, while both were active in separate groups, they first crossed paths; once those bands ended, the two began composing material jointly. After completing a full album's worth of songs, they assembled supporting players and hit the road without high expectations, yet the strong audience reaction to their cross-genre approach prompted them to continue. This led to a contract with Monotreme Records and the release of their debut, 2010's Eleven: Return and Revert, which earned widespread praise and drew parallels to Portishead and Explosions in the Sky. Following a European tour, they relocated to Manchester to write and produce their sophomore effort, 2013's Wilderness. Their third release, The Menagerie Inside, arrived in 2015. Eventually they settled in Oban, the scenic coastal resort on Scotland's western shore. Heaton and Burn stayed at the project's center, working with an ever-changing roster of additional musicians on recordings and live dates. Their fourth album, 2018's Evaporate, marked the first time they handled all writing and arrangements themselves, resulting in a lighter, more restrained sonic palette.
